Cardinal, Northern

The male northern cardinal is one of the most recognized birds with his bright red colored feathers, red bill, pointed crest, and black face mask. Though the female is a muted brown color with red markings on her wings, she does also have the red orange bill, pointed crest, and black face mask. Cardinals are fairly large birds that are commonly seen in backyards. Typically these birds tend to be the first feeders of the day and the last feeders of the day. Cardinals like to feed on seeds and corn. It is fun to watch a cardinal sloppily mash a piece of corn in its conical bill.
